Marvel, Marvel, Marvel…when will you break the forgettable villain curse? Zero character development for the villain, Kaecilius, and even less motivation for what his character does in the film. Although the visuals alone is worth the price of admission (especially in 3D), the story suffers from the lack of respect for what could have been a great villain. Mads Mikklesen is a splendid actor and it is not his fault that three writers couldn’t give his character meaning. So before I go further…there be spoilers ahead:
One small mention of Kaecilius earlier in the film by Baron Mordo to Stephen Strange hints that he lost his family. That is exactly what should have been the reason for his evil intentions. Yet tl live forever? Have eternal life? To simply suffer at the memory of his deceased loved ones? Ridiculous. Why even write such a tiny backstory if you didn’t intend to utilize it in a flashback reveal for the villain so the audience can empathize and connect with his pain. Destroying the world for anything less than a personal and emotional motivation is just poor, poor writing.
I am certain with the film’s box office success, these three writers will go on to more films and career successes. Yet please anyone and everyone at Marvel…Make villains great again! #MakeVilliansGreatAgain
