Nic Cage. A man who is not afraid to take risks and chances as an actor. I went into this film with no knowledge of the plot other than knockoff Chuck E. Cheese animatronics gone evil in a horror film. What I could not have guessed was how Nic Cage would have no lines of dialogue at all….let me repeat – At ALL in this film. When I first picked up on this fact within the first ten minutes it became a different film experience. Actually on the edge of my seat waiting for a Nic Cage to say something. Anything. Yet scene after scene not a single word. Amazing. Although the film is horrible plot wise, just to watch Cage navigate the scenes with characters who are engaging him with dialogue and he just walks off is simply a master class in acting.
Here comes the spoilers.
A mysterious man (Cage) is driving fast through the empty country roads when his sports car runs over a spike strip which flattens all four tires. He gets towed to a small town and the mechanic doesn’t take credit card and the only ATM in town is busted. Conveniently a town businessman offers to fix his car in exchange for him to clean up a local entertainment center called Willy’s Wonderland overnight. He accepts and goes about cleaning the place. As he is cleaning up the place the animatronics come to life and one by one they attack him and he fights each one and dismembers them and bags them up. Without any dialogue or concern, he goes on with cleaning up. What a dedicated work ethic!
Local teens of the town know that this place is evil and they plan to break in to destroy the place. It soon gets revealed that the local police, mechanic, and business owner all all in on the evil secret of the place being possessed by a serial killer’s spirit. The mysterious man was brought in to be some sort of sacrifice to the place. Scene after scene the man battles an animatronic and defeats/dismembers them. Bags of trash stack up and the place gets cleaner and cleaner. Even when the kids break into the place and are frightened by the animatronics trying to kill them the man never speaks a word and goes on about his business of cleaning and killing. Amazing acting by Nic Cage. The fact other actors and actresses are speaking to him and getting nothing back is nothing short of astounding.
As morning comes the people in on the secret get killed in spectacular fashion and the mysterious man drives off in his car along with a female who is done with the town. I quite frankly can’t suggest anything that would make this film greater than it is. The mere fact Nic Cage does not speak a single word is worth watching this film. His stares and glaring looks are now speaking volumes for him. Certain to become a cult classic…I hope they make a sequel and really play with the audience anticipation of Cage possibly speaking a word.
